Cadbury Dairy Milk has spent more than 75 years in India, and for much of that time its advertising has tied the bar to the way Indians mark good news: a result, a win, a festival, a small act of kindness.

The story in India starts in 1948, the year after Independence, when Cadbury introduced Dairy Milk to Indian shoppers. A year later, in 1949, the company opened a factory in India. The bar itself was older. Cadbury launched Dairy Milk in England in June 1905.

Today the brand belongs to Mondelez International. Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury in 2010, and in 2012 Kraft’s global snacks business became Mondelez International. In India, it is made and sold by Mondelez India Foods. When the company marked 75 years in India in 2023, it celebrated with vintage Cadbury packaging, consumer initiatives and digital experiences.

WCRC MegaBrands covers 501 categories in India and selects one benchmark brand in each. It looks at brands through five pillars: Brand Positioning & Recall; Consumer Trust & Sentiment; Product, Innovation & Delivery; Sustainability, Governance & ESG; and Digital & Financial Soundness. Pillar 1: How Cadbury Dairy Milk Owns Share of Mind

Brand Positioning & Recall · weighted 28% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Cadbury Dairy Milk’s story in advertising is often told through a few seconds of joy on a cricket field. In 1994, the brand released a film for its “Asli Swad Zindagi Ka” campaign. A batsman reaches his century, and a young woman watching from the stands runs onto the field and dances to celebrate with him.

Until then, chocolate in India was mostly seen as a treat for children. The 1994 film spoke to grown-ups and the moments they celebrate, and helped take the brand beyond children.

The brand built on that idea for decades. Later, the line “Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye” invited families to share Cadbury Dairy Milk the way they would share sweets on a happy occasion.

In July 2018, as Cadbury marked 70 years in India, the brand moved from sweetness to goodness. Its new line, “Kuch Achha Ho Jaaye, Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye”, celebrated small acts of generosity. The launch film showed an older brother quietly refilling his younger brother’s empty wrapper with his own chocolate. Anil Viswanathan, then Director, Marketing (Chocolates) at Mondelez India, said the campaign would aim to “recapture the Cadbury Dairy Milk spirit, strengthen connections with consumers” and celebrate people who go the extra mile for others.

In September 2021, the brand revisited its own classic. In the new version, the woman hits the century and her male friend dances onto the field, under the line “Waqt Badla Hain, Zindagi Ka Swaad Nahin” and the hashtag #GoodLuckGirls. The brand’s own past had become material for its future.

Pillar 2: Why India Trusts Cadbury Dairy Milk

Consumer Trust & Sentiment · weighted 26% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Trust in Cadbury Dairy Milk has been earned over many decades, and it was tested once in public. Around Diwali in 2003, reports of insects found in some bars in Maharashtra led to stock seizures and a sharp fall in sales during the festival season. The company attributed the problem to poor storage by retailers and distributors.

Under “Project Vishwas”, meaning trust, Cadbury worked with wholesalers and retailers on how chocolate should be stored. It also changed its packs. Smaller bars moved to a double wrap of aluminium foil and a sealed poly flow pack, and larger bars to heat-sealed, poly-coated foil. The new packaging raised costs, but the company did not raise prices. In 2004, it signed Amitabh Bachchan as brand ambassador to reassure families.

By one later account, demand returned to normal within about six months.

Mondelez India still treats that trust as the brand’s core. In 2023, as the company marked 75 years in India, Nitin Saini, then Vice President of Marketing at Mondelez India, said: “Throughout all brand journeys, the most important aspect for us is to ensure the brand places trust and authenticity at the center of all its communication and abides by its core purpose.”

Pillar 3: The Engine Behind Every Cadbury Dairy Milk Bar

Product, Innovation & Delivery · weighted 20% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Cadbury Dairy Milk is made at scale. Mondelez India makes its products in 15 factories in the country: four of its own and eleven run by third parties. They are spread across locations including Baddi, Malanpur, Thane, Induri and Sri City.

How Cadbury Dairy Milk reaches you

Cocoa farmsTamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh
Cocoa operationsDharapuram, Tamil Nadu
Factories15 in India, including Sri City
Neighbourhood storesabout 30 lakh supported

Sri City, in Andhra Pradesh, shows the company’s ambition. The 134-acre campus was opened on 25 April 2016 to make chocolates and other foods, and the state’s Chief Minister described it at the time as Mondelez’s largest plant in Asia Pacific. Chandramouli Venkatesan, then Managing Director of Mondelez India Foods, said at the opening that the multi-category site would serve “both India and regional markets”.

Reach matters just as much as making. Mondelez India says it supports about 30 lakh small neighbourhood stores, where small packs keep the brand within easy reach. Rs 5 packs were already part of the range by 2004.

The range has also grown upward. Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk extended the brand into a richer, more indulgent bar. In August 2016, the brand brought its Marvellous Creations range to India, and in July 2018, as part of its 70th year, it added new flavours including mango and a new Rs 100 price point. Behind these products sits a Global Research, Development and Quality centre in Thane, near Mumbai.

Pillar 4: Cadbury Dairy Milk and the Cocoa It Helped Grow

Sustainability, Governance & ESG · weighted 16% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Cadbury Dairy Milk’s story in India includes a long effort to grow cocoa at home. Mondelez says its cocoa programme in India began in 1965, with an experimental farm in Kerala.

That programme now runs as Cocoa Life in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Mondelez says it has reached about 1 lakh cocoa farmers over the decades. At the end of 2024, about 6,500 farmers took part in Cocoa Life itself, in about 100 communities. Mondelez India runs cocoa operations from Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu and says it has set up seven nurseries across the four states.

Science has been part of the effort. Since 1987, the company has funded the Cadbury Cocoa Research Project at Kerala Agricultural University. The university says the partnership has produced 15 cocoa varieties and describes it as probably the first public-private research collaboration in farming in the country. Cocoa Life also works with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute.

The work reaches beyond the farm. Mondelez India says Cocoa Life has helped about 5,000 community members gain financial literacy skills, and that 22 cocoa communities have child protection committees. At its Sri City plant, the company says, women make up 48% of the shop floor.

Pillar 5: Cadbury Dairy Milk’s Growth With Financial Strength

Digital & Financial Soundness · weighted 10% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Cadbury Dairy Milk is part of a large business. Mondelez India Foods, which makes the brand along with the company’s other Indian products, reported revenue from operations of Rs 12,747 crore in FY2023-24, up 13.3% on the year before. In FY2024-25, revenue from operations was Rs 12,503 crore, in a year when sharply higher raw material costs squeezed its margins.

The company continues to back its brands. Mondelez India spent more than Rs 1,500 crore on advertising and promotion in each of FY2023-24 and FY2024-25. In 2023, it said it would invest about Rs 4,000 crore between 2023 and 2026 in manufacturing, warehousing, cold chain and rural distribution.

Modern trade and e-commerce now make up about 20% of Mondelez India’s sales, and the company runs a Global Hub for Mondelez Digital Services in India. Samir Jain has led Mondelez India as President since August 2023, after a decade as managing director of another food company in India, and in August 2026 Vinay Subramanyam joined as Vice President, Marketing, India.

The Cadbury Dairy Milk Benchmark

Every category has leaders. A MegaBrand is the brand its category is measured against. Cadbury Dairy Milk holds that place in Chocolate, mass because its record is strong on every pillar at once. Its classic advertising was still being revisited decades later, it kept the trust of families through a hard test, it is made in Indian factories, and its maker supports lakhs of small stores and has invested in Indian cocoa for six decades.

Above all, Cadbury Dairy Milk shows how a global product can become local. It did not ask Indians to adopt a foreign habit. It joined the habits they already had: sharing something sweet when something good happens.
