Ferrero Rocher is a chocolate people recognise before they unwrap it. The gold foil does the work. In India, that look has come to mean one thing above all: a gift worth giving.
The story begins in Alba, a small town in the hills of Piedmont in northern Italy. Pietro Ferrero founded the family business there in 1946. His son Michele turned it into a global name, and his grandson Giovanni leads the group today. Ferrero Rocher was created in Alba in 1982. The brand says the idea was “to make all the pleasure of a sophisticated chocolate speciality accessible to a much wider public.” It launched in Europe that year, reached the United States in 1988 and China in 1994, and is now sold in 140 countries, according to the brand.
Ferrero entered India in 2004. Its Indian company works from a head office in Pune and a plant at Baramati in Maharashtra.
WCRC MegaBrands covers 501 categories in India and selects one benchmark brand in each. It looks at brands through five pillars: Brand Positioning & Recall; Consumer Trust & Sentiment; Product, Innovation & Delivery; Sustainability, Governance & ESG; and Digital & Financial Soundness. Ferrero Rocher has been selected as the Mega Brand for Chocolate, premium by the Business Intelligence Unit of WCRC (World Centre for Research and Consulting). Here is how Ferrero Rocher’s record lines up with each pillar.

Pillar 1: How Ferrero Rocher Owns Share of Mind
Brand Positioning & Recall · weighted 28% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Ferrero Rocher’s recall starts with the product. Each piece is built in layers: a whole hazelnut at the centre, a chocolate cream around it, a crisp wafer shell, and an outer coat of milk chocolate studded with chopped hazelnuts. Then comes the gold foil. It is a product that is easy to describe and hard to mistake.
Inside a Ferrero Rocher
The second source of recall is gold. Ferrero India has made the colour the thread of its storytelling. Its Diwali campaign in 2022 ran as #GoldenDiwali. In 2025, the festive film was called “Add your Golden Touch”, with hoardings in Mumbai and Delhi and a push on YouTube and social media.
The third is a steady face. Actor Hrithik Roshan has fronted Ferrero Rocher campaigns in India since at least 2022, across Diwali, Valentine’s Day, the Ferrero Collection launch in 2023 and the Ferrero Rocher Bars film in 2026.
The fourth is cultural fit. Ferrero India’s campaigns use festive cues such as rangoli, torans, diyas and dinner rituals, so a global brand reads as part of a local celebration.
Pillar 2: Why India Trusts Ferrero Rocher
Consumer Trust & Sentiment · weighted 26% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
A gift is a test of trust: the giver stakes a little of their own standing on what is inside the box.
Ferrero India’s marketing head, Zoher Kapuswala, put it this way when launching the 2025 Diwali campaign: “Diwali is a season of warmth, light and togetherness. Over the years Ferrero Rocher has become an integral part of Indian families celebrating special occasions.”
The company reads gifting closely. Kapuswala has described three distinct kinds: “gifting for special occasions, gifting throughout the year, and gifting for people you love.” The brand’s calendar reflects that, with campaigns built for Diwali and for Valentine’s Day.
Trust also rests on quality. In September 2026, Kapuswala said: “Ferrero Rocher has built strong equity in India through its signature combination of quality, craftsmanship and textures.”
Price sits inside that trust. Ferrero India makes no secret of being premium. In March 2026, Kapuswala said: “Yes, we are premium, but we are premium because we deliver value to the consumers.” The approach is not new. As far back as 2014, Luigi Oddone, then Operational Managing Director of Ferrero India, told Business Today: “There is a space for premium products even in a country dominated by price-conscious consumers.”
Pillar 3: The Craft Behind Every Ferrero Rocher
Product, Innovation & Delivery · weighted 20% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Ferrero Rocher’s Indian range has grown in deliberate steps, each one aimed at a clear need.
The first step was reach. Ahead of Diwali in 2020, Ferrero India launched Ferrero Rocher Moments, an affordable gifting option inspired by the brand’s signature taste, in hermetic packaging suited to India’s tropical climate. Ferrero has said that Moments is made at its Baramati plant near Pune, with most of its raw materials sourced locally.
The second step was the high end. In October 2023, Ferrero India introduced the Ferrero Collection, a festive assortment that pairs Ferrero Rocher with two other Ferrero specialities in packs of 15 and 24. “India has a long-standing custom of gifting during festivals and special occasions. With the premium gifting market on the rise, today’s consumers are looking for novel premium gifting options that create lasting impressions,” said Kapuswala, then head of marketing for Ferrero’s pralines.
The third step, in September 2026, takes the brand beyond gifting. Ferrero Rocher Bars come in two 90 g variants, Classic Hazelnut and 70% Cocoa Hazelnut, priced at Rs 499. Kapuswala explained the thinking: “In terms of gifting, we have largely addressed the key need states and opportunities available to us today. The next opportunity was to explore another need state, which is sharing and self-indulgence. This is where Ferrero Rocher Bar fits in.” The pitch to existing fans is simple. In his words: “you were already gifting Ferrero Rocher to your loved ones; now love yourself and try Ferrero Rocher bars.”
Delivery has kept pace. Ferrero Rocher is sold through modern trade, general trade, e-commerce and quick commerce. Within traditional trade, Kapuswala singles out the top 40,000 to 50,000 stores, such as mithai, food and gourmet shops, as a premium segment of their own. The company is also adding more coolers in stores to strengthen availability. Ferrero also describes its Indian operation as a production hub for Asia and the Middle East that exports half of its local output.
Pillar 4: Ferrero Rocher and Responsible Sourcing
Sustainability, Governance & ESG · weighted 16% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
A hazelnut chocolate depends on hazelnut and cocoa farmers, and Ferrero Rocher’s sustainability record starts there. The figures below come from the Ferrero Group’s Sustainability Report for FY2024/25, released in mid-2026.
The group says 97% of its hazelnuts are now traceable to the farmer, up from 94% a year earlier. Its cocoa is 98% traceable to farm polygon maps, and 99% of it is sourced through certifications or independent standards. Palm oil is 98.6% traceable to the plantation.
The brand’s own pack has changed too. Ferrero began rolling out a redesigned Ferrero Rocher box in September 2021. By FY2024/25, the new design had cut the plastic-to-product ratio by 14.7% against a 2019/20 baseline and avoided about 16,000 tonnes of plastic in total. Across the group, 92.9% of packaging is designed to be recyclable, reusable or compostable.
Group Scope 1 and 2 emissions fell 7.2% year on year in FY2024/25, and 24 Ferrero plants now run on fully renewable grid electricity. In India, Ferrero said in 2017 that it had commissioned a 1.5 MW rooftop solar installation at its Baramati plant, built for about Rs 8.8 crore and expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,926 tonnes a year.
Governance rests on long-term family ownership, now in its third generation. Giovanni Ferrero, President of the group, set out the link between sourcing and the future of the business in the 2026 report: “Ferrero’s long-term success remains closely linked to the well-being of the people and ecosystems on which our supply chain depends.”
Pillar 5: Ferrero Rocher’s Growth With Financial Strength
Digital & Financial Soundness · weighted 10% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Turnover for Ferrero Rocher as a single brand is not published, so the brand’s financial backing is best read through its parent. In the year to 31 August 2025, the Ferrero Group reported consolidated turnover of EUR 19.3 billion, up 4.6% on the year before, with products sold in more than 170 countries and 36 manufacturing plants.
In India, the brand is now chasing growth beyond gifting. Ahead of the 2026 festive season, Ferrero India set a double-digit growth target, with Kapuswala saying: “We are targeting to grow faster than the category and gain share.”
Digital channels sit at the heart of that plan. Ferrero Rocher Bars went on sale first through quick commerce platforms, before moving into modern trade and premium stores in the major metros. Ferrero India now has a dedicated quick commerce budget, Kapuswala said in October 2025, and for Diwali 2025 it built an exclusive quick commerce box that paired a Ferrero Rocher pack with a golden candle that lights up when opened. In March 2026 he summed up the appeal of the channel: “If you want a small treat, you want it here and now.”
In the same March 2026 interview, Ferrero India was reported to use AI-driven tools for demand forecasting, media optimisation and bidding across digital platforms.
The Ferrero Rocher Benchmark
Every category has leaders. A MegaBrand is the brand its category is measured against. Ferrero Rocher holds that place in Indian premium chocolate because its record is strong on every pillar at once. It is instantly recognised, trusted as a gift, carefully extended into new formats, backed by measurable progress on sourcing and packaging, and supported by a parent with deep financial strength.
Above all, it shows how a global product can earn a local role. Ferrero Rocher found the moments where Indians already give, and made itself part of them.
