MegaBrands: frequently asked questions
Short, sourced answers about MegaBrands, India's Most Powerful Brands, published by WCRC. Every number here is read from the same research file as the rest of the site.
The basics
What is MegaBrands?
MegaBrands is India's benchmark of brand power. Across 501 categories, one brand in each holds the benchmark — measured on the power it holds in the Indian mind rather than on what it earns. It is the line its category is measured against. Read the full description on the MegaBrands page.
Who publishes MegaBrands?
MegaBrands is published by WCRC, the World Centre for Research and Consulting. WCRC International is the organisation behind this site, and the editorial desk of WCRC Leaders compiles the MegaBrands stories. See About this site.
How many brands are in MegaBrands?
501 Mega Brands, one in each of 501 categories, across 13 sectors and 55 industries. Each was assessed against five named competitors, which makes 2,505 competitor slots naming 2,219 different brands. 3,000 brands were assessed in all. The whole list is on the universe page.
Is a Mega Brand the best brand in its category?
WCRC does not describe it that way. A Mega Brand is the standard its category is measured against; it is not ranked against the other brands in its category. The rankings are separate: the 55 Industry MegaBrands and India's Most Powerful 250 are drawn only from the MegaBrands universe, and no brand enters them from outside it.
How is MegaBrands different from Business MegaBrands?
MegaBrands names one brand in each of 501 categories on consumer perception of brand power. Business MegaBrands is a separate annual index of 1,280 purely Indian business brands in 250 categories, published by WCRC for the 2026–27 edition. 110 brands appear in both.
Selection and method
How are MegaBrands selected?
Three thousand brands are assessed on fifty parameters, market share and, above all, the consumer — not balance sheets. Each of the 501 MegaBrands is selected against five named competitors, all of them published.
What does the assessment measure?
50 parameters in five weighted pillars: Brand Positioning & Recall 28%; Consumer Trust & Sentiment 26%; Product, Innovation & Delivery 20%; Sustainability, Governance & ESG 16%; Digital & Financial Soundness 10%. Evidence is weighted 60% primary research, 25% secondary research, 15% additional inputs. The methodology page shows the pillar weights, the evidence weighting and the selection funnel; the India's Most Powerful 250 page lists the parameters in each pillar and the five research phases.
Why are parent companies not listed?
The unit is the market-facing brand, never the parent or group. Ponds, Lux and Surf Excel enter separately; their parent does not enter at all. A maximum of eight slots per operating company's consumer portfolio, published as a stated diversity provision of the benchmark.
Can a brand pay to be a Mega Brand?
No. Recognition in MegaBrands stays free and separate from WCRC's paid research and intelligence, which is a different offering: the Codex.
What are the Industry MegaBrands and India's Most Powerful 250?
They are the rankings drawn from the MegaBrands universe: the 55 Industry MegaBrands and India's Most Powerful 250. No brand enters the rankings from outside the universe. See India's Most Powerful 250 and the sectors.
Scores and voting
What is a Brand Pulse score and when do scores go live?
The first set of Brand Pulse scores, based on WCRC's Evaluation Framework, will be made live from mid-November 2026. Thereafter, all Brand Pulse and Market score additions will be based on Consumer Sentiment scoring around the category and the brand. Brand Pulse scores are built every quarter. Follow the scores on the live score page.
How does the consumer vote work?
Anyone can pick the most powerful brand in each of the 501 MegaBrands categories. Voters register with email verification, and each person gets one vote in each category. Vote on the vote page.
