Nivea: How a Blue Tin Became India’s Benchmark in Everyday Skin Care
Nivea, selected as the Mega Brand for Skin care, mass by the Business Intelligence Unit of WCRC, began with one cream in Hamburg in 1911. In India it has grown from an imported blue tin into a wide range for body, face, men and sun, with its own plant in Gujarat.

Nivea is easy to picture. A round blue tin, white letters, a thick white cream. That single image has carried the brand across more than a century, and it tells shoppers what is inside before they open the lid.
The story starts in Hamburg. In 1890, Dr. Oscar Troplowitz bought the laboratory of Paul C. Beiersdorf. Advised by the dermatologist Prof. Paul Gerson Unna, he worked with a new emulsifier called Eucerit. In 1911 the two men created Nivea Creme, which Beiersdorf describes as “the world’s first stable oil-and-water-based cream that was suitable for mass production.” The name comes from the Latin “nix, nivis”, meaning snow. In 1925 the tin turned blue with white lettering, the look it keeps today.
In India, Nivea was on sale for decades before Beiersdorf set up Nivea India Pvt Ltd in 2005. Since then the brand has built a factory and a much wider range.
WCRC MegaBrands covers 501 categories in India and selects one benchmark brand in each. It looks at brands through five pillars: Brand Positioning & Recall; Consumer Trust & Sentiment; Product, Innovation & Delivery; Sustainability, Governance & ESG; and Digital & Financial Soundness. Nivea has been selected as the Mega Brand for Skin care, mass by the Business Intelligence Unit of WCRC (World Centre for Research and Consulting). Here is how Nivea’s record lines up with each pillar.

Pillar 1: How Nivea Owns Share of Mind
Brand Positioning & Recall · weighted 28% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Nivea’s recall begins with its hero product. Beiersdorf says the formula of Nivea Creme has changed very little in more than a hundred years, and the blue tin works as the brand’s logo, its packaging and its promise at once. Every newer product, from body lotion to sun care, borrows from that one familiar object.
The brand has also kept a single voice. Back in 2011, Rakshit Hargave, then Managing Director of Nivea India, explained the approach: “You won’t find each product or category talking a different language.” He described the values behind it in the same interview: “The intangible virtues that Nivea wants to stand for are trust, quality and honesty.”
In recent years Nivea has turned that heritage into a reason for younger buyers to look again. In December 2023, Nivea India launched #TheOGs, a digital-first campaign that called Nivea Creme “the OG cream” and featured Madhuri Dixit, Shreya Ghoshal and Sania Mirza. Sunil Gadgil, then Marketing Director, said: “With #TheOGs campaign, NIVEA India celebrates the timelessness of NIVEA Creme…”
The brand speaks openly about its place in the market. “Nivea has always been a challenger brand in India,” Gadgil told Storyboard18 in 2023. Beiersdorf’s 2023 annual report describes an India strategy aimed at Gen Z, with Nivea Soft and Nivea Body Milk as the products to widen use. In November 2025, a Body Milk campaign with actor Rohit Saraf took that approach onto social media and city streets. As Marketing Director Shweta Dalal put it: “If young India is consuming pop-culture driven content, then that’s exactly where we want to meet them.”
Pillar 2: Why India Trusts Nivea
Consumer Trust & Sentiment · weighted 26% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Skin care is a personal purchase. People put the product on their face and their children’s hands, and they tend to stay with what has worked. Nivea’s trust rests on a long record of use in Indian homes.
When Geetika Mehta was appointed Managing Director in January 2024, she described Nivea as “a brand synonymous with trust and quality in skincare.” In July 2026 she explained why that trust has to be renewed: consumers, she said, do not stay loyal simply because a brand is old. “They stay because the brand continues to understand them and deliver on its promise, year after year.”
Consistency does much of the work. The cream in the blue tin is, in essence, the cream of a century ago, and the tin itself has kept its colours since 1925.
Trust also depends on clear pricing at the shelf. After the GST rate changes of September 2025, Nivea India published revised maximum retail prices for its range on its website, effective 22 September 2025.
Pillar 3: How Nivea Makes and Renews Its Range in India
Product, Innovation & Delivery · weighted 20% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
For many years, most Nivea products sold in India were imported: Business Today reported in June 2014 that Nivea India imported almost 60% of its products. That same month, Nivea India announced its first Indian manufacturing plant, at Sanand near Ahmedabad, on land allotted by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation. The site was planned with a research and development centre focused on products for Indian skin.
The plant began production in 2015. Rakshit Hargave, then Managing Director, called it “Nivea India’s contribution to the Make in India initiative.” Beiersdorf still lists Sanand as its NIVEA manufacturing plant in India.
The range has widened steadily from that base. Nivea’s Indian site now lists four families: Body, Face, Men and Sun. One major recent step has been into face care. In February 2025, Nivea launched its Luminous Even Glow range in India, built on Thiamidol, an ingredient Nivea describes as patented. Geetika Mehta said the range was “designed to visibly reduce dark spots and restore skin’s natural radiance.” In July 2026, the range grew to include a serum, two foam cleansers, a day cream with SPF 50 and a night cream, sold through retail stores and e-commerce. “Skincare in India is evolving rapidly, with consumers increasingly seeking solutions that go beyond surface-level benefits to address skin concerns with proven efficacy,” Mehta said at that launch.
Sun care is another focus. In April 2025, Nivea launched Nivea Soft Daily UV, which pairs everyday moisture with UV protection, and named actor Taapsee Pannu as what it called its first Indian Global Brand Ambassador.
Pillar 4: Nivea, a Brand That Cares Beyond Skin
Sustainability, Governance & ESG · weighted 16% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Nivea India is an affiliate of Beiersdorf AG, a listed German company, and takes part in its parent’s sustainability work.
One practical effort sits inside Nivea India’s own supply chain. The company runs a programme aimed at multilayer plastic, a material that is hard to recycle, across its distributor network. In June 2024, Nivea India reported that the recovered plastic had been processed into sheets that replace wooden panels in store units such as racks. Neha Parekh, supply chain director, said: “we are thrilled to witness the impactful outcomes of our efforts”.
Beiersdorf has also brought India into its Women in Circularity programme, launched in November 2023 with EUR 4 million in funding. The programme supports female waste collectors in four countries. In India, Beiersdorf’s partner is the recycling enterprise Green Worms. Across all four countries, the aim is to collect and recycle about 15,000 tonnes of plastic a year and to benefit more than 1,600 women.
Inclusion reaches the factory floor too. Beiersdorf says that at its production centre in India, women have been allowed to work all three shifts since February 2022.
Pillar 5: Nivea’s Digital Reach and Financial Backing
Digital & Financial Soundness · weighted 10% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this
Nivea India is a private company and does not publish its Indian sales. Its strength is best seen through its owner. In 2025, Beiersdorf reported group sales of EUR 9,852 million, with organic growth of 2.4%. The NIVEA brand, as Beiersdorf reports it with its lip care line included, brought in EUR 5,529 million across all markets.
India matters in Beiersdorf’s plans. In its 2025 annual report, the company named India among five key markets, alongside China, the United States, Japan and Brazil, that will get more room to shape portfolios around local consumer needs. Sunil Gadgil summed up the journey so far in Beiersdorf’s 2023 annual report: “We have been active in India for around 20 years and have grown very dynamically in the process.”
Digital channels have become a larger part of how Nivea reaches Indian shoppers. In December 2020, Nivea India launched its own shopping website, delivering to close to 17,000 PIN codes at launch. Sachin Killawala, then Marketing Director, said the website was “in continuation of our larger digitalization objective of our entire business”. In January 2025 the company appointed a new E-Commerce Director to lead its online sales.
The Nivea Benchmark
Every category has leaders. A MegaBrand is the brand its category is measured against. Nivea holds that place in Skin care, mass because its record holds up on every pillar at once. It has an instantly familiar hero product, a reputation built over decades, a factory in India, practical work on plastic and inclusion, and the backing of a global parent that has named India a key market.
Above all, Nivea shows that a brand can stay the same and keep changing. The blue tin has hardly moved in a century, while the range around it now reaches into face care, sun care and online shopping. Beiersdorf CEO Vincent Warnery put the brand’s reach in four words: “NIVEA is for everyone.”
