Kellogg’s came to India with a product most households had never eaten for breakfast. When it arrived, the Indian market for packaged cornflakes was tiny. A bowl of flakes with milk was a new idea, and the brand had to teach it before it could sell it. That patient work of building a habit, one household at a time, is the thread that runs through this story.

The brand itself is more than a century old. In 1906, W.K. Kellogg set up the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in Michigan, and the Kellogg’s name followed as the range grew beyond corn flakes. In 1994 Kellogg’s entered India, starting with cornflakes and other flaked cereals. Today Kellogg India Private Limited runs the brand from Mumbai, and its revenue from operations rose to Rs 1,913 crore in FY2025-26.

WCRC MegaBrands covers 501 categories in India and selects one benchmark brand in each. It looks at brands through five pillars: Brand Positioning & Recall; Consumer Trust & Sentiment; Product, Innovation & Delivery; Sustainability, Governance & ESG; and Digital & Financial Soundness. Kellogg’s has been selected as the Mega Brand for Breakfast cereals and oats by the Business Intelligence Unit of WCRC (World Centre for Research and Consulting). Pillar 1: How Kellogg’s Made Breakfast Cereal a Household Name

Brand Positioning & Recall · weighted 28% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Kellogg’s recall in India began with a category that barely existed. When the brand arrived in 1994, packaged cornflakes were a small niche. Kellogg’s set out to build the habit of eating cereal at breakfast.

That role still shapes how the brand talks about itself. In 2022, Sumit Mathur, then Director of Marketing at Kellogg South Asia, put it simply: “Our single biggest task at Kellogg’s is to drive penetration by driving category relevance.” The campaign he was describing spoke to mothers aged 25 to 44 and ran in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Malayalam. A 2023 Chocos launch also ran in seven regional languages, and the company said it was sampling around 1.5 million packs.

The second source of recall is a small set of strong names under one master brand. Corn Flakes carries the original idea, with pack lines such as “A Power Breakfast for an energetic start”. Chocos is built around children’s breakfasts, and in 2023 Vinay Subramanyam, then Senior Director of Marketing at Kellogg’s South Asia, said it had been “delighting consumers in India for more than 25 years”. Muesli, Oats and Crunchy Granola add grains, fruit, nuts and seeds. Each of them carries the Kellogg’s name.

Leaders who join the business see that inheritance clearly. On his appointment as Managing Director for India and South Asia in 2022, Prashant Peres said: “The challenge of leading a business in India is always thrilling, but more so when it is a legacy brand such as Kellogg.”

Pillar 2: Why Indian Families Trust Kellogg’s at Breakfast

Consumer Trust & Sentiment · weighted 26% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Trust in a breakfast brand is earned on the label. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Original in India is, by the brand’s own pack claims, enriched with seven essential vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folate), high in iron and a naturally low-fat food with only 1% fat. The Muesli range includes a variant with “0% Added Sugar” that is high in fibre and protein, and other muesli variants are enriched with iron, vitamin C and B vitamins. The brand says Multigrain Chocos is maida-free, and that its Protein Chocos variant carries 50% more protein than the Multigrain Chocos recipe.

The brand has also made the case for breakfast itself. In 2013 Kellogg India supported an India Breakfast Habits Study, which reported that one in four Indians said they skipped breakfast and 72% ate a nutritionally inadequate one. In 2014, Kellogg India donated 400,000 breakfasts to schoolchildren in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

That concern for children became a long-running programme. In 2019 Kellogg India launched Bright Start with The Breakfast Revolution and Sesame Workshop India, serving fortified cereal breakfasts with protein, calcium, iron and zinc to children in need. It began with 5,764 children in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Mohit Anand, then Managing Director of Kellogg India, explained the idea: “We believe no child should face the day on an empty stomach, as morning hunger is the enemy of learning.”

Pillar 3: The Kitchen and Supply Chain Behind Every Kellogg’s Bowl

Product, Innovation & Delivery · weighted 20% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Kellogg’s makes cereals in India. Kellogg India runs two manufacturing plants of its own: one at Taloja, near Mumbai in Maharashtra, which is also its registered office, and a second at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. Its head office is in Powai, Mumbai, and sales offices in Gurugram, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad support the trade across the country. In FY2025-26, manufacturing of processed foods made up about 69% of the company’s turnover.

The range has been shaped for Indian tastes and grains. Kellogg’s now sells a Millet Muesli and a Choco Millet Muesli, the latter made with seven grains including ragi and jowar. In September 2025 it launched Kellogg’s Multigrain + Corn Flakes exclusively for India, built on five grains: ragi, wheat, barley, rice and corn. It is high in iron and fibre and carries B vitamins, folate and vitamin C. “With Kellogg’s Multigrain + Corn Flakes, we’re reimagining a classic to meet the evolving preferences of Indian consumers,” said Prashant Peres, then Managing Director, Kellanova South Asia.

Vinay Subramanyam, then Marketing Director, Kellanova South Asia, described the shift behind it: “Indian consumers today are far more mindful about what goes into their breakfast bowl, they want food that’s nourishing, and enjoyable.”

Price has been part of delivery too. In 2010, after a test in Tamil Nadu, Kellogg’s took a Rs 10 small pack of Corn Flakes national, following the same route it had used for Chocos. “Low price points help us reach the Tier II and III towns,” said Anupam Dutta, then Managing Director of Kellogg’s India. In 2025, Multigrain + Corn Flakes went on sale through general trade, modern trade, large-format stores and e-commerce.

Pillar 4: Kellogg’s and the Business of Better Mornings

Sustainability, Governance & ESG · weighted 16% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Kellogg’s social work in India returns to the meal it knows best. Bright Start remains the core of Kellogg India’s corporate social responsibility. In 2023-24, the company spent about Rs 2.3 crore on CSR, much of it on Bright Start breakfasts in Mumbai and Vadodara and in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Near its Sri City plant it funded solar street lights for Gollavaripalem village and took on apprentices; near Taloja it supported widows in Raigad with sewing machines.

The plan for 2026-27 is larger. Kellogg India’s annual action plan sets out breakfast programmes for about 23,500 children through two partners, The Decimal Foundation and Feeding Annapoorna, with close to 34 lakh servings planned, alongside projects near both plants, disaster relief and apprenticeships at Sri City.

The plants are cutting their energy use. In FY2025-26, Sri City drew on a 1 MWp off-site solar installation generating about 5,000 kWh a day, while energy-saving air handling units at Taloja save about 250,000 kWh a year. A second phase of solar power at Taloja, running since November 2024, generates about 160,000 kWh a month. Kellogg India also holds 26.30% of a solar company, Flaresun Solar, and buys its output under a 15-year power purchase agreement. At a global level, Kellogg’s India website says the brand is on track to create “Better Days” for 3 billion people by the end of 2030.

Governance follows a clear structure. Kellogg India’s board met six times in FY2025-26, it runs a CSR committee under the Companies Act, and its statutory auditors gave an unqualified report and reported no fraud. Kellanova, its parent, holds 99.99% of the shares, and in December 2025 Kellanova became part of Mars. In January 2026, Prashant Peres was named General Manager, India, Mars Snacking, to lead the combined Mars and Kellanova businesses in India.

Pillar 5: Kellogg’s Growth on a Sound Financial Base

Digital & Financial Soundness · weighted 10% in the MegaBrands framework · How MegaBrands measures this

Kellogg India’s numbers show steady growth from a solid base. Its revenue from operations rose from Rs 1,530 crore in FY2022-23 to Rs 1,596 crore in FY2023-24, Rs 1,723 crore in FY2024-25 and Rs 1,913 crore in FY2025-26. That last step was growth of about 11%. These are company figures, which include some goods the company trades as well as the cereals it makes.

The business has stayed profitable through that growth. Profit after tax was Rs 128.6 crore in FY2024-25 and Rs 122 crore in FY2025-26, and the board declared an interim dividend of Rs 5 a share for FY2025-26 and recommended a final dividend of Rs 6.50 a share.

Its reach runs across physical and digital shelves: the 2025 Multigrain + Corn Flakes launch went out through e-commerce as well as stores. Since December 2025, Kellogg’s in India has also had the backing of Mars, whose snacking business now includes Kellanova’s international Kellogg’s cereals.

The Kellogg’s Benchmark

Every category has leaders. A MegaBrand is the brand its category is measured against. Kellogg’s holds that place in Indian breakfast cereals and oats because its record is strong on every pillar at once. It has built the cereal habit over three decades, states its nutrition clearly on the pack, makes its cereals in its own Indian plants, works within a clear governance structure and has grown revenue in each of the last three years.

Above all, Kellogg’s shows that a brand can create a habit, not just meet one. It arrived in 1994 with a breakfast many Indians had never tasted, and it has spent three decades adapting it to Indian grains, budgets and mornings.
